ADBA’s Vision for a Net Zero Future from Policy to Practice
We were proud to participate in Low Carbon Agriculture Show that took place on 5-6 March 2025, at NAEC Stoneleigh. Our policy lead, Dr Gareth Mottram gave a presentation titled “The role of green gas in Net Zero” during the Renewables & Energy session. Dr Mottram talked about ADBA’s newest report published in December 2024, which includes findings about the economic benefits of expanding biogas as part of the UK’s transition to net zero. The report concludes that maximising the use of biogas in our net zero strategy would save the UK economy £298 billion by 2050, approximately saving £415 per year for every household in the country. Dr Mottram highlighted not only the economic advantages but also explained how biogas provides a practical and feasible pathway to achieving our climate goals.
A Comprehensive View of On-Farm AD
The session covered the growing adoption of on-farm AD plants and their role in reducing emissions. Alongside Dr Mottram, we had the pleasure of hearing from Frans de Boer of DB Agri, who shared his family’s journey “From cows to kilowatts and beyond,” detailing their experience from planning to operating an AD plant.
Lucy Hopwood from NNFCC complemented these perspectives with her presentation on “Maximise energy and savings with on-farm AD,” which provided practical guidance on establishing small-scale AD systems. She covered crucial aspects including regulatory compliance, funding access, and achieving energy security through on-farm biogas production.
What does it mean for AD?
As the use of on-farm AD plants continues to rise and approximately making up 10% of all AD plants in the UK, we are encouraged by the growing interest in biogas technology as a solution for reducing agricultural emissions while creating new revenue streams for farmers. The presentations at the Low Carbon Agriculture Show once again highlighted both the economic and environmental benefits of our technology.
We look forward to continuing our work with farmers, operators, technology providers, and policymakers to expand the adoption of AD technology and realise its full potential in creating a sustainable future.
